Mining compressor structure
Design of an industrial compressor structure to withstand extreme conditions in a mining environment
- Client
- Atlas Copco
- Type of mandate
- Commercial

The project
As part of mining operations, Atlas Copco needed to install an industrial compressor directly in the excavation area. The equipment had to be protected by a compressor structure capable of withstanding major mechanical force, including the impact of a bulldozer pushing the platform against the mine wall.
The mandate was to design an industrial compressor structure robust enough to absorb the impact of the mechanical force, while also withstanding the constant pressure exerted by the surrounding earth.

Shop drawing design and in-shop fabrication of the structure
Structure specifically designed to withstand a direct push from heavy machinery
The result
We first produced a detailed shop drawing to precisely define the configuration of the compressor structure and anticipate stress areas. This step was essential to ensure a consistent design that could be validated by an engineer.
Fabrication was then carried out in our welding shop in Montreal by a professional welder, using MIG welding to ensure strong, uniform assemblies throughout the metal structure.
To increase mechanical strength and durability in an underground environment, reinforcement welds were performed using flux-cored (FCAW) welding. This process was selected to maximize weld strength and ensure better performance against moisture, dirt, and abrasive conditions associated with an in-ground installation.

Services provided
MIG welding
MIG welding ensured strong assemblies, contributing to the overall rigidity of the structure under load.
Flux-cored welding
This welding process was used to reinforce areas subjected to high mechanical stress and maximize impact resistance.
Shop drawing
Producing the shop drawing made it possible to turn a technical need without plans into a structured solution.
